One of Japan’s largest glass manufacturers, Asahi Glass said it has developed a new glass designed for smartphones and tablet PCs that is considerably tougher than conventional glass. According to the company, its Dragontrail glass is around six times as tough as typical chemically-treated soda lime glass.
At a Tokyo news conference, reporters were invited to attempt scratching a sheet of glass with a key, but despite exerting pressure the glass did not sustain any damage. After a drop the glass were still intact.
At the press conference, the company also showed videos of tests it had done one the glass. One video showed the glass bending, but not breaking at 60kg of pressure. It also resisted the shock of a hammer strike in another video.
Dragontrail has been developed over the last two years and the company has already started supplying it to electronic makers. The company, however, did not identify its clients.
